Dental Provider Credentialing

Before a dental provider can submit claims for reimbursement, they must first be formally credentialed by the insurance carrier—a process through which the carrier evaluates the provider’s qualifications, competency, and demonstrated professional standards. Credentialing serves as the gateway to participation in a dental insurer’s network, and timely completion of this process is essential for ensuring uninterrupted patient care and provider compensation. OSI plays a critical role in facilitating prompt and accurate credentialing, helping dental insurers meet required timelines and supporting providers’ ability to receive swift payment on clean claims, along with interest on any unpaid claims. Under 13.10.37 NMAC, effective July 1, 2026, New Mexico introduces a more streamlined and predictable process for dental provider credentialing.

Dental Provider Credentialing Resources

Under 13.10.37 NMAC, effective July 1, 2026, New Mexico introduces a more streamlined and predictable process for dental provider credentialing.  The rule requires dental carriers to use uniform credentialing forms, defined as the application form provided by CAQH, along with one additional application form approved by the Superintendent. Each carrier is authorized to use two forms in total: the CAQH form and one Superintendent approved form, available upon the carrier’s formal request. Carriers may not require providers to submit information beyond these approved forms unless it is reasonably related to nationally recognized credentialing standards.

The Office of Superintendent of Insurance (OSI) will review dental credentialing alternate form requests based on the completed alternate application form submitted by the requestor in SERFF. OSI will compare the submitted template against the credentialing variables published in the CAQH Provider Manual to determine whether the alternate form captures the necessary provider credentialing information.
