• Debt Collection Protection Act – Provider Resource

Starting July 1, 2021, New Mexico law protects low-income individuals from medical debt collection. The law is called the Patient’s Debt Collection Protection Act.

Debt collection can be selling the debt to a third party, and it can be filing a lawsuit against the patient. Debt collection also can be placing a lien on the patient’s property or garnishing wages. Please refer to the Supplement 21-07 for further information for Providers.
