Does Auto Insurance Cover Wind and Hail Damage? If you have comprehensive coverage, it may help pay to repair auto body, windshield and interior damage caused by hail. If you only have liability coverage on your auto insurance policy, you may not be covered for a hail damage claim. Liability coverage only protects you from damage that you cause with your vehicle to others. It’s important to buy comprehensive coverage well before you think you’ll need it. If you notice damage to your car after a hailstorm, report the claim to your insurer as soon as possible. Your insurer can walk you through the steps you’ll need to take to get an estimate and get your car repaired. If you need help with your claim, contact us at 855-427-5674. Does Homeowners’ Insurance Cover Wind and Hail Damage? Most standard homeowners’ insurance will cover hail damage to your roof and other parts of your home. However, hail damage is the most common claim type for homeowners’ insurance, and your insurance policies may include restrictions to your hail damage coverage. For example, limitations to your policy could include exceptions for cosmetic damage, meaning it only affects the aesthetics rather than function of the house, or higher deductibles specifically for hail. Contact your agent to review your policy terms and conditions. In higher-risk areas, your policy may have a separate deductible specifically for that peril. Be sure to check if wind or hail damage is either excluded or covered by a separate deductible option. How to Protect Your Car From Hail Damage When hail or severe weather is forecast for your area, pull your car into a garage, covered parking lot or other protected areas. You can also purchase a padded car cover or a hail protection blanket. If caught in your car during a hailstorm, find an area where it’s safe to pull over and stop driving. Make sure you pull completely off the highway. Stay in your car until it stops hailing. How to Protect Your Home From Hail Damage Invest in hail-resistant shingles that are resistant to both cosmetic and functional damage. Not only will this mitigate the cost of wind and hail damage but many insurance companies offer discounts for homeowners who have impact-resistant roofing. Also, check if your insurer offers any endorsements or additional roof coverage to replace your current roof with stronger and safer materials. Even though your homeowners’ insurance covers your personal property if it needs repair or replacement due to hail and wind, it’s better to bring any lawn furniture into a covered space such as your garage or storage to avoid damage in the first place.
