What does OSI do?

The Office of Superintendent of Insurance (OSI) is New Mexico’s consumer protection agency for insurance. OSI oversees private health and life insurance, auto insurance, business insurance, home insurance, and title insurance. We review and improve premium rates and other plan details to ensure insurance is reliable and rates are reasonable. We also oversee producers who sell insurance in New Mexico.

When consumers have problems with their insurance, OSI provides consumer assistance, processes complaints, resolves appeals and grievances, and holds hearings. If needed, OSI also takes enforcement action against individuals or companies that violate the law. We also combat insurance fraud. OSI’s enforcement team identifies key insurance issues and takes action to protect consumers and root out bad actors.

OSI has been a national leader in responding to COVID-19, taking swift action to ensure the plans we regulate cover COVID-19 testing and treatment without cost-sharing, surprise billing protections, and expanded telemedicine and telehealth services.
